It’s worth saying upfront: that feeling is completely normal. And it tends to change quickly once people experience what professional personal care actually looks like in practice.
A personal carer isn’t there to take over. They’re there to help you do the things you want to do, in the way you want to do them.
What is personal care?
Personal care is support with the everyday tasks that can become harder with age, illness, injury or disability. It’s one of the most commonly requested home care services in Australia, and one of the most valued by the people who receive it.
Unlike nursing (which involves clinical health tasks) or domestic assistance (cleaning, cooking, shopping), personal care focuses specifically on helping you look and feel your best each day.
What does a personal carer help with?
A trained Envigor personal carer can assist with:
Bathing and showering: Whether that’s a full shower with support, a bed bath, or help getting in and out of the bathroom safely.
Dressing and undressing: Including choosing what to wear and managing buttons and zips that have become tricky.
Grooming: Hair brushing and styling, shaving, nail care and general personal presentation.
Oral hygiene: Brushing teeth, cleaning dentures and mouth care.
Toileting and continence support: Provided with complete professionalism and discretion.
Mobility and transfers: Helping you move safely between positions, whether that’s getting out of bed, moving to a chair, or navigating around the home.
Skin care: Moisturising, checking for pressure areas and basic skin maintenance as part of a daily routine.
Every visit is guided by your care plan, which is built around your preferences and your support plan from your My Aged Care assessor.

What a personal carer does not do
It’s helpful to know the boundaries as well. Personal carers are not nurses. They don’t administer medications, perform wound care, or carry out clinical health procedures. That’s the role of a registered nurse or allied health professional, which can also be arranged as part of a broader Support at Home package.
Personal carers also don’t typically cover cleaning, cooking or shopping – those fall under domestic assistance. Some people have both personal care and domestic assistance as part of their care plan, which makes sense for many households.
Who benefits from personal care?
Personal care is right for a wide range of people, and there’s no single profile. Clients include:
- People with reduced mobility due to age or a chronic condition who find certain tasks physically difficult or risky to do alone.
- Those recovering from surgery, a fall, or a hospital stay, where temporary support makes all the difference to recovery.
- People living with dementia, where a familiar, consistent carer provides both practical help and reassurance.
- Anyone who simply wants to maintain their daily routine and personal standards as independently as possible.
The common thread isn’t a particular diagnosis or age, it’s wanting to feel comfortable and dignified at home.
Is personal care funded under Support at Home?
Yes. Personal care falls under the Independence support category of Australia’s Support at Home program, which means it can be funded through your home care package. A co-payment will apply depending on your income, but the assessment process will make this clear.
If your loved one hasn’t been assessed yet, the first step is to contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. If they already have a package, speak to your current provider or contact Envigor directly to discuss adding personal care support.
What makes an Envigor personal carer different?
All Envigor personal carers hold a minimum Certificate III in Individual Support, and many have additional qualifications and years of experience. We do our best to match you with a consistent team, so the person coming through your door always feels familiar.
We also know that trust takes time to build. Our carers understand that the first few visits can feel a little awkward, and they’re experienced at helping people feel at ease. Most clients tell us the nerves fade quickly.
How to arrange personal care
Getting started is straightforward. Contact your local Envigor team for a free, no-obligation conversation about what you need. We’ll help you understand your funding options, set up a care plan that fits your routine, and introduce you to your carer before visits begin.
There’s no pressure, no lock-in, and no long wait.
Frequently asked questions
Can I request a carer of the same gender?
Yes, absolutely. This is a completely reasonable preference and one we’re happy to accommodate wherever possible. Just let us know when you get in touch.
What if I need more support over time?
Your care plan isn’t set in stone. If your needs change – whether you need more visits, longer visits, or additional types of support – your plan can be updated. Your Envigor Care Services Manager or Care Partner can review this with you regularly.
Is it okay to feel nervous or awkward about having a carer?
Completely. Most people do at first. Personal care involves a level of trust that takes a little time to develop, and that’s entirely understandable. Envigor carers are experienced at making people feel comfortable from the very first visit. You’re in good hands.
