The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the biggest change in disability support and funding in Australian history and aims to give people with a disability and their carers access to services and funds to put them in control of their own future.
The NDIS began its three-year rollout across Queensland on 1 July 2016 and became available to thousands more when it rolled out across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan, Fraser Coast and Cairns (including Far North Queensland) on July 1, 2018. It will be operating state-wide by January 2019 when it rolls out to Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast and Gympie.
Here’s what you need to know about the NDIS and how to be ready when it rolls out in your area.
What is the NDIS and how does it work?
The purpose of the NDIS is to provide a range of individualised support services to people who have a disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. The NDIS aims to take a flexible and whole-of-life approach to working with participants, their families and carers and to make sure that the services they receive are the services they need, not the services that a provider has said they must have.
One of the biggest changes that the NDIS introduces is giving people more choice and control over how, when and where their supports are provided. Each participant has an individualised plan that can be reviewed and changed as the needs of the participant change. Once a person is accepted to the NDIS, they will continue to receive services through the scheme throughout their lifetime.
The NDIS works by connecting people with support providers within their local community to help them to pursue their goals and aspirations and participate in daily life.
Do I qualify for the NDIS?
To access the NDIS you must live in an area where the NDIS is available, be under 65 years of age, an Australian citizen or resident or permanent visa holder, and meet the disability or early intervention requirements. If you are unsure whether you meet these requirements, an access checklist is available on the NDIS website.
What do I need to do to access the NDIS?
Those currently receiving disability services will be contacted before their area transitions to the NDIS system. For those not currently receiving services, you will be able to apply to access the NDIS when it is available in your area. It’s also worth noting that a person who meets the NDIS access requirements may apply to become a participant of the NDIS up to 6 months prior to this date. So those in the July 1, 2018 roll out areas can get started now.
If you are unsure of how to get started, the best way to get information is to attend one of the NDIS information sessions in your area. A list of these events is available on the NDIS website. Here you can also find information and resources to help you prepare.
