Coping alone at home after being discharged from hospital

Most of us like to think that if we had to go to hospital our family and friends would rally around to make sure we are looked after both in hospital, and when we come home. It is certainly comforting to know that someone will be there to help you settle in, cook your meals, help around the home and run errands while you recover.

Unfortunately for some, this is not the case. As sad as it sounds, in our experience Elderly are particularly vulnerable in this circumstance. Perhaps they have lost a spouse, they have no children, or their family have moved interstate or overseas and they do not want to burden their friends. So how does one go about coping alone at home after being discharged from hospital?

Recovering from illness or surgery isn’t easy for anybody. If you take into consideration all of the daily tasks required to comfortably recover at home, for an elderly person these tasks may seem insurmountable. The simple things we all take for granted such as washing and tidying up around the house, putting fresh sheets on the bed, popping to the shops for bread and milk, or attending necessary follow up medical appointments can be difficult for an elderly person to do alone after a visit to hospital.

Many Elderly and their families do not realise that there are Post Hospital Home Care services available specifically to help you settle in at home after your hospital stay. These types of services will arrange your pick up from the hospital, they’ll ensure you are comfortable at home with fresh sheets on the bed, food in the fridge, and they will tidy up around the home and help with personal care if needed. A Carer can stay with you 24/7, or return for a few hours each day for as long as you need to get back on your feet. If you need to attend post hospital medical appointments, your Carer will ensure you get to your appointment on time, and home safe again.

At Envigor Home Care, we appreciate that many of our Elders in Australia live somewhat independently and may not usually require help at home. However, in the event of needing to go to hospital may require short term post hospital care. We are pleased to be able to offer this service, and can offer care from as little as 2 hours to 24 hours as required, for as long as required. If you or your loved one are concerned about coming home from hospital, contact Envigor today on 1300 368 446.
