Anisha, who moved to Australia from Nepal two years ago, speaks about how aged care differs in her home country and how she found a satisfying career in aged care.
Working as a Lifestyle Support Assistant at Envigor for the past year, Anisha delivers a wide range of care services.
“I provide personal care for the clients, including showering and toileting, and help with other domestic activities as well – helping them make a cup of tea, anything they want,” says Anisha.
“I really enjoy it. I’ve only been doing this job for one year and I really like it as at the end of the day you get satisfaction because you are helping people.”
While Anisha is relatively new to the care industry, she brings with her the cultural experience of growing up in Nepal and always caring for elderly relatives in the family home.
“I didn’t know too much about aged care homes back home. We have our parents and grandparents at home in our country – we live together as a big family.
“With globalisation, there’s some aged care homes coming up now, but people don’t really like that concept. There might be one or two aged care homes in the bigger cities, that’s all.”
When she moved to Australia, Anisha thought caring for the elderly would be something she’d like to do and relishes being able to treat her clients as if they were her own family.
“I came here about two years back and I was looking at what to do, I had friends working in aged care and I heard from them and I thought I’d give it a try. I did my placement and really enjoyed it.”
“I like working with older people – my parents are older as well and I’ve always been with them. I feel comfortable and it’s nice to be with them.”
