10 foods to improve your mind as you age

A healthy body goes hand in hand with a healthy mind.

What you eat can impact your physical and mental health and function, especially as we age.

A healthy diet is associated with overall good health and can reduce your risk factors for many chronic conditions and certain foods are also associated with boosting brain health.

With this in mind, here are 10 foods to add to your diet for a healthy mind:

  1. Fish. Fatty fish such as salmon, trout and sardines contain a high level of omega 3’s, which are essential for brain health. Studies indicate that omega 3s may slow age-related mental decline and possibly ward off chronic conditions such as Alzheimer’s.
  2. Eggs. Full of Vitamin B, a study shows that consumption of eggs is linked to a reduction in brain shrinkage and slows down cognitive decline.
  3. Leafy vegetables. Green leafy vegetables such as broccoli and spinach are full of Vitamin E and folate, which is good for the brain and the body.
  4. Avocados. Avocados are also full of Vitamin B, C, E and folate. This little green creamy super food is a powerhouse in protecting your brain and full of goodness.
  5. Whole grains. A high fibre diet has been linked to lowering the risk of cognitive impairment and a range of other chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, which is linked to brain diseases.
  6. Blueberries. They may be small, but they are mighty! Studies show that blueberries (aka the ‘brain berry’) are linked to improve learning capacity and motor skills, lowering the risk of dementia and reducing the risk of alzheimers.
  7. Tomatoes. Tomatoes are full of antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage, including those in the brain.
  8. Nuts. Nuts are full of Vitamin E.  According to one study, Vitamin E may help to prevent cognitive decline especially in the elderly.
  9. Olive oil. Antioxidants known as polyphenols are thought to improve memory and fight off age related changes.
  10. Turmeric. This spice is known for its healing properties and is a powerful, natural anti-inflammatory agent.

When it comes to healthy ageing, adequate nutrition is paramount, especially for brain health and slowing down cognitive decline. If you’re not already, start to include these foods for a healthy, everyday, enjoyable diet!
