Are you finding it hard to do the things you once could?

Ageing is a constant adjustment whereby gradually you start finding it hard to do the things you once could.  We all experience this gradually over a lifetime, and for some through sudden changes in circumstances, this process may change more rapidly than expected.

For elderly people who live independently, there may become a time whereby they feel that maintaining that independent life is becoming more challenging and is no longer a lifestyle that they continue to sustain.

Memory loss, chronic illnesses, health-related disabilities or general stamina can all contribute to the increasing difficulties of managing daily living activities.  Health conditions such as arthritis may mean that certain activities such as using the hands for cooking or pegging clothes on the line aren’t able to be performed.  Perhaps failing eyesight is impacting on driving, reading instructions or writing cheques. If mobility becomes an issue when using public transportation or even moving about the home such as in and out of a chair or bed can become more challenging.

As we get older managing those tasks around the home can become difficult. It may be only problematic in a few areas such as transportation issues or it may be greater such as the ability to perform self-care activities such as dressing, bathing, grooming, and toileting. However, continuing to maintain an independent life can begin to be unsafe and personal health and well-being can be compromised.

When an elderly person is faced with such a situation, there are the several options, such as entering a nursing home, moving into assisted living centres or seeking help from outsiders. Family may be able to provide additional support or there are services specifically designed to assist persons wanting to remain in their home.  This may be the preferred option for many, to have both the ability to remain at home and be supported to function as independently as possible with support provided in the areas required.
